When you are traveling for your employer, do you need business travel insurance?  Although it isn’t really a necessity and is not required like car insurance is, it may be a good idea to help you relax and remain stress free.

If you decide that you do want coverage, speak with your employer to see what type of insurance coverage they provide in exchange for your traveling to represent the company.  In the event that they don’t offer much, you may want to check in to your personal health insurance to see if there may be business travel provisions.

There are several things you should be aware of when it comes to business travel insurance.  Here are a few things that your policy should provide:

1.  If you are traveling abroad, you may want to make sure your medical and health policy will cover a sudden illness or injury.

2.  In the unlikely event that you injure someone or damage their property while traveling, you need personal liability coverage to protect against lawsuits.

3.  You may need transportation coverage in the event that sudden illness or injury requires transport by helicopter or ambulance.

4.  Be sure to protect yourself financially in case your airline goes bankrupt and you have an unused ticket.  This would also benefit you in the event that the airline is closed down due to an employee strike.

5.  If your trip is shortened for reasons like illness, accident or an emergency at your home, make sure reimbursement costs are included in your business travel insurance policy.

Always read the fine print carefully.  You want to be aware of any loopholes that may exist.  For example, you don’t want an incident to happen such as the loss of your possessions, then have your insurer make claims that you were not keeping watch over your items.

When searching for business travel insurance, your own personal travel agent is probably not where you will get the best deal.  To help you decide where to get your policy, you may want to check to see if the agent’s services are regulated under the U.S. Financial Services Authority.

If you travel on business trips more than two times per year, you should consider purchasing business travel insurance.  This will help you save money and time, as it won’t be necessary to go through the entire process again the next time you take a business trip.
