Car Travel Insurance / Auto Traveling

When traveling abroad, you need car insurance.  While many car rental agencies provide temporary insurance, there are other factors you need to consider as well.  The information found here will help you determine what action to take regarding travel insurance.  If you are still unsure about traveling auto insurance, contact your insurance company with questions or concerns you may have.

Here are a few tips that will help you decide what is best for your needs when it comes to traveling and car insurance:

1.  If you are traveling abroad, ask any friends, family or business colleagues about insurance coverage.  It may be that their insurance policy provides coverage for anyone who may drive their car.

2.  When planning to rent a car, rent from a major car rental agency.  They normally offer better services and coverage.  Temporary insurance is usually available at car rental agencies, and may be dependent upon how long you plan to travel.

3.  If you have credit cards such as MasterCard of American Express, check with them.  When traveling abroad, many of these memberships offer auto insurance coverage if you are renting a vehicle that is charged on your credit card.  Be aware of the coverage and limits on your cards.

4.  When you have an option, choose temporary car insurance coverage while traveling.

5.  If you are traveling to Mexico, you will need to purchase auto insurance while there.  Policies issued in the United States and Canada are not valid in Mexico.  In the unlikely event you are involved in an accident, you will be seen an uninsured - even if the accident is not your fault.  You must have traveling car insurance written and placed on file with a Mexican insurance company.

You will need an international drivers license if you intend to drive while you are in a foreign country.  This will also be needed in the event you want to rent a car in that country.

Waiting until you are in a foreign country to obtain traveling auto insurance can be a complex process. If possible, take the policy that covers risks with you.  Check with car rental agencies and do some research online.

When you are going to be driving in a foreign country, check their basic rules of driving as many of these rules are different, especially in Europe and Asia.

Whether you are going on a family vacation or business trip, always be prepared.  Traveling auto insurance is essential when you are visiting abroad, so do some research to find the best option and value for your needs.
