When you travel, you should make certain that you have home insurance that will cover any unforeseen circumstances that may happen while you are away.  In the event of a burglary or some other sort of catastrophe, you want to make sure that your valuable possessions are covered.

It is a good idea to purchase travel insurance to cover any mishaps while you are taking a business trip or family vacation.  With good coverage, you can be sure that any medical emergencies or accidents that happen while you are away will be taken care of, so that you don’t end up spending thousands of dollars because you were not insured. You also want to make certain that your luggage, travelers checks and any other valuables that may be lost or stolen are covered.

But, what about your home?  Unbelievably, many people don’t have home insurance, which is absolutely a must when traveling.  What if your home were to be broken in to, or damaged by severe storms?  You would lose your home and all of its contents, without the benefit of replacement or reimbursement.  This would be an absolute tragedy, and would send most people in to financial ruin.

Other than making sure your home is insured while you travel, here are some other tips that will help deter any would-be intruders:

1.  Leave lights on.  When lights are on in the evenings, a potential intruder does not know for certain if anyone is home or not.  This will help deter many burglars.

2.  Have neighbors pick up your mail and the newspaper.  It is an obvious sign to intruders when mail and newspapers are piling up that no one is home.

3.  Make absolutely certain before you leave that all windows and doors are locked.  Don’t make it easy for someone to break in!  Install dead bolt locks if possible.

4.  Pay someone to take care of your lawn.  A tall, scraggly lawn is a sign that no one has been home for a few days.  You may also want to consider leaving a few toys strewn around, so that it appears children have been playing recently.

5.  If you can afford it, have a security system installed.

These are just a few ideas that will help you avoid potential break-ins while you are away.  The most important thing you can do to protect your home and possessions is to have good home insurance, particularly while traveling.  You don’t want to return from a fun filled vacation to find that you have been robbed, and that you are financially responsible for replacing all that has been stolen.

Of course you want good travel insurance at affordable rates, but you absolutely want to cover your most valuable asset - your home and its contents!  Make sure that before you leave, you have good home insurance.  Peace of mind will allow you to have a terrific time, no matter where you go.
